Come, Mighty One, Take My Heart

How would you like me to spend this Lent? What would you like me to give up?

Yourself.

What?!?

Give up yourself.

How do I do that? How do I give up myself?

The way my mother gave up her womb to make room for me.

The way John the Baptist gave up the fame and glory to prepare my way.

The way Pope resigned.

Ok…. But I come with no credential. I don’t hold any special titles or worth to my being.

Your heart. Give me your heart. I value your heart.

Jesus, you had my heart from the moment you formed me. You had my heart from the moment I met you. You had my heart from the start.

And I want more. You can always give me more of your heart.

* * *

If my heart is what you desire, I give you my heart.

Though it is filled with fear, easy to be startled, and broken, if it is what you ask of me, then my heart I shall give you completely.

And if by surrendering my heart to you, I am giving up myself,

if that is all it takes,

then, by all means, take me, take all of me–

You take my heart.

It is completely, totally, entirely, absolutely, wholly, unquestionably, unarguably, fully, perfectly and eternally —

Yours.
