All human beings thirst for love. They seek it from each other, and if that is not possible, they seek it among material things. Everything is various expression of the desire to love and to be loved- even the childish tantrum or unbearable betrayal. We love each other with such distortion and we persecute each other’s love with even worse understanding of our distorted reality. Even though we so desire to love and be loved… our desire often leads us to the point of destruction. The truth is- we simply don’t know how to love.
Love is like the whisper of a stream… without interfering with each other, eagerly offering my essence to quench his thirst, going around his ways, slowly whispering into his ear with ever the same gentleness of a stream.. that’s how you love.
Offering rest when he needs it, giving time when he requests, honoring each other’s space and speed- love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails (Corinthians 13:4-8).
A long time friend of mine asked me if I could translate her letter to her husband into English last night. She said she is not good at writing and even worse when it comes to writing in English. After I translated her heart-filled letter of forgiveness and mercy to her husband who committed adultery, my heart ached by the degree of the distortion of their passionate love for each other and the untimely separation that caused so much pain for these two human beings. My heart was immediately at peace upon remembering how God drew my friend to His heart through this ordeal. She is a witness to His great Love. She is truly a testimony of how God works good for those who love Him. She has now came back to God because of this hardship and came to know His love.
Sometimes, I believe that life is nothing but a learning curve to learn to love genuinely. This life here on earth is the step through which God prepares our hearts to make them capable of the great Love that will be experienced in our real lives in heaven where we will face His glory every moment. We are adjusting our eyes, our senses, our hearts, to that great Love of God that will pour down on us with no limit. Are we ready for that? Because if we are not made ready by God, that Love will drive us really, really, CRAZY.
And so today, I am pained by the way we practice love here on earth, but then I also find hope by our intense desire for love. Love is in the core of all of us, it is not to be forgotten nor is it to be unfelt. It’s there to be recognized for us all because God put it there. So love like the whisper of a stream today- because who knows you will have another chance to love here on earth tomorrow?
